Apple Season! It's New Apple Season again. The end of August each year brings the first of the new season Irish apples, in the form of the delicious 'Discovery' apple. This apple arose as a chance seedling which turned out to be a true 'find', because of its positive attributes, hence the apt name given to it by its 'breeder'. It is an offspring of Beauty of Bath, but is an improvement of that variety, having a scrumptious sweet 'n tangy flavour, attractive pink-tinged flesh, and though it ripens a bit later than its parent, it keeps for several weeks, rather than the mere several days of 'Bath'. We get our Discovery apples from Wexford, though we're hoping to add it to our own orchard next year by planting a new plot of Discovery trees.
Autumn Strawberries: The second crop of strawberries is in season since the 2nd week of the month. We'll make some jam from these as well, just to try it out, so there might be a few pots for sale at the Market Stall later in the Autumn.
