First Strawberries: This month we picked our first strawberries. This is our first year growing the crop, and I am very pleased with the results. It's always a bit daunting and scary embarking on a new venture, and you're afraid you might fail due to lack of experience, but it is very gratifying when things end up working out fine! Customers at the Markets are impressed with the flavour, which is very reassuring - my customers are more fussy and discerning about the flavour of stuff rather than the appearance, so that's my priority!
Covering the Grape Tunnels: Its the time of year to cover the waking vines in the vineyard, in preparation for the growing season. It was nice and cold last winter, which suits the dormant vines perfectly, but now that the buds are swelling and bursting, they want to be warm The polythen covers over the rows will protect the leaves from wind and rain, and raise the temperature to improve the growth and ripening of the grapes. Once harvest is over, the covers will come off again.
